Water! Water! Water!

Okay, I've said it before - probably at least 12 754 times - and I am going to keep saying it until everyone understands just how important it is to DRINK ENOUGH WATER!!

Why? Let me count the ways...

  • Inside our body, water helps regulate human body's temperature. Water is nature's air conditioner inside our body; when it's hot, water keeps the body cool through perspiration, and when it's cold, water keeps the body warm through insulation.

  • Through balancing the electrolytes, water controls and regulates the blood pressure.

  • Water forms a big and important portion of human saliva, sweat and tears, and all these are important for proper body functions.

  • It keeps the moisture intact around mouth and eyes.

  • Our joints move painlessly only because the water works as a lubricant on them.

  • Water, through its presence in and around the organs, cushions them from any outside jolt.

  • It also works as an excreting agent in our body by flushing human kidneys.

.. and really, there are many more reasons- but I'm hoping that's enough to get my point across!

So how much water is enough?

water intake calculation

Well, that's kind of a complicated question, required water intake is based on quite a few variables; gender, age, weight, activity level, medications, caffeine and alcohol intake etc.

But let's keep this simple:

Take your body weight in pounds, divide by 2, then divide by 8 again and that's how many glasses of water you should have each day!

If your having trouble wrapping your head around drinking that many more glasses a day, TRY THIS:

Find your current water consumption and each week add one more glass - Easy!

Week 1: 2-3 cups/day

Have a glass of water with each of your meals, 3 is easy! (but either during or after your meal, slamming a glass of water before eating can dilute your stomach acid impairing digestion)

Week 2: 4 cups/day

Try starting off each day with a glass of water, one down and only 3 to go!

Week 3: 5 cups/day

Getting there! Try adding slices of fruit or lemon to your water for variety. (Avoid the sugars though)

Keep going until you've reached your daily goal!

You may notice that you will have to use the washroom a lot more often when first starting out… Don’t worry- It will pass! Your body will get used to it and thank you for it!

Now, if you find water boring to drink - I'm sorry I no longer accept that as an excuse! Read my next blog post for great naturally flavoured water recipies!
